The colour of our skin, hair and eyes is determined by pigments called melanin. When skin cells become damaged or unhealthy, skin pigmentation can either occur due to an excess of melanin, which is produced to to help protect your skin, or a lack of melanin. This causes parts of your skin to turn darker (hyperpigmentation) or lighter (hypopigmentation).
We understand that this effect can leave you feeling self-conscious, but both skin conditions are completely normal and treatable. Skin pigmentation can be present from birth and also be caused or worsened by sun exposure and hormonal changes. The effect can also worsen with age or if left untreated. In the past, bleaching products have been used to lighten these lesions but mainly with poor or short term effects. While lasers and IPL devices were primarily used for hair removal treatments, they quickly became adapted for facial rejuvenation techniques and we now use them to help reduce and remove pigmented lesions.
At West London Dermatology Centre, we offer the latest technology to improve the look and feel of pigmented lesions. The light from the laser or IPL devices selectively targets the excess melanin particles. These particles become damaged by the laser light and are subsequently removed by the body’s natural waste disposal methods.
Most skin pigmentation can be effectively removed in an initial course of 3 sessions, although some deeper lesions may require further treatments. This method, provided at our dermatology clinic in Chiswick, uses an expert cooling method throughout, causes no damage to the surrounding tissue and is a great alternative to more invasive treatments.
Any questions you may have will be answered in your initial free consultation with one of our specialist dermatologists. Please call us on 0208 742 2204 to make an appointment or complete our online form to book your treatment today.
